So, how do you build an email list in 2020? This is something we get asked a lot and aim to answer is this post.
Here, 8 Mailchimp partners and email marketing experts share their top tips…

I would say it’s a combo of two things; valuable content + social media. Start by creating something awesome, like a free tool, a guide or make your blog unique and well written, create an opt-in landing page, build your social media followers and connections, then drive people to the landing page with posts and ads.

How do you build an audience from zero, in the age of information overload and Content Shock? It’s always been difficult, now even more, but the key is always the same: think about what you can do for your audience, not the reverse. You must find the intersection between what you can do very well, what you’re passionate about, what your audience needs/want to get, and what your competitors can’t do (as well as you do), and you build on this.
Then you must allocate resources for paid promotion, as organic growth is no longer an option: you find your audience where people spend their time, that is on social media, where you have to deliver good and engaging content and pay to reach other people interested in your contents and/or similar to your existing audience.

The same way as the years before. Keep in mind that people are newsletter/mailing tired, so offer something different/special. If you keep this in mind, you’ll slowly build a steady audience.
Any tips for collecting new email addresses: new customers, discount code by newsletter signup, invite a friend campaign etc. Use your creativity… Each company is different.

Building audiences is relatively simple in 2020. There are so many tools at your fingertips. Facebook lead forms, competitions to your existing customers to get them to share, email signup form builders, Leadpages, Clickfunnels, Mailchimp and Sumo popups and more.
What you do is put out good offers and good content. Then use the platforms to amplify the engagement you’re getting. It does cost to play though so having good SEO is still key and making it a focus of the business to sign people up.

This year has been an anomaly in so many ways, and list building is no different. In the US, when people are not worrying about the pandemic, they are distracted by “murder hornets” or feeling pressure about social issues and election results and the implications of that. These issues, and the global implications of all of the challenges of this year, have made it very difficult to build and expand email lists since inboxes are already inundated with so many truly vital messages from state health offices, schools and HR departments. Many prospects are not interested in “more email” because they can barely process what they already see coming in.
That said, you can still build a list with very clear targeting of your audience and honing your offer (lure) to provide the incentives that make YOUR email worthwhile to them. In the B2B space, people are still doing their best to work and do their jobs despite the limitations of remote working and the complications of that. Take advantage of that opening and provide them with what they need to make the workdays less difficult. In the consumer markets, everyone needs a little happiness. Find offers that make people’s lives easier, happier and more joyful, and be a source of good in their lives and the world that they will want to be a part of.

Content. When you educate about your industry and services on your website and social media people are more likely to subscribe because they know your emails and newsletters will be interesting and educate them.
Remember to give your readers content they’re interested in. The easiest way to do this is to answer the questions you’re receiving every day about your product/services. At the very least let those questions guide your content creation and outreach campaigns.

Building an email list is still as important as ever and there are so many ways you can do this. Subscribers usually want something in return for signing up whether that’s a discount code or a free PDF download or free advice. What can you possibly give your subscribers as an incentive for signing up? You can post this on social media or using a pop-up on your website, but having a clear incentive for signing up works. Also hosting a webinar is also a great way to gain new subscribers. Share your knowledge or expertise and people will sign up!

There is no one-size-fits-all way to build your email audience. You need to be where your target audience is, give them a reason or incentive to subscribe, then continue to deliver relevant, meaningful communications. While attracting new subscribers is necessary, it’s harder than retaining your existing subscribers. So don’t lose focus on retention while you try to acquire a new audience.
